Fern-infrarotes Farbbild der "Whirlpool-Galaxie" M51. Rot, Grün und Blau entsprechen den drei Farbbändern von Herschel/PACS bei 160, 100 und 70 Mikrometern. Licht dieser Wellenlängen zeigt Staubwolken zwischen den Sternen. Solche Staubwolken enthalten das Rohmaterial für die Entstehung neuer Sterne. Blaue Farben heben die Gebiete warmen Staubes hervor, der von nahe gelegenen heißen Sternen aufgeheizt wird. Der kühlere Staub in anderen Regionen von M51 zeigt sich in Rot.
