European Research Consortium HIPERTRACK presents results at European Slab Track Symposium in Bruxelles
Bruxelles / Darmstadt - Dr. Ingo Friedrich, vice president of the European Parliament, will inaugurate the European Slab Track Symposium in Bruxelles today. International rail way experts, scientists, applicants, contractors and service providers in the field of slab track are discussing the perspectives and challenges of the high speed railway lines in Europe.
HIPERTRACK is one of the research and development projects commissioned by the European Union. Therefore, the Fraunhofer LBF and seven partners from Italy, Austria, Slovenia und Germany developed an innovative high performance rail track. Based on a comprehensive investigation of existing slab track systems, track/vehicle dynamics and damage mechanisms of critical track components, the project consortium developed a modular HIPERTRACK slab track system. The project aimed in particular to improve the slab track system in comparison to common ballasted tracks.
Two main slab track types were developed and improved:
Model I is based on a mass spring system with precast concrete slabs, combined with an elastomer layer and the newly designed continuous rail support (CRS).
Model II consists of the slab track (Feste Fahrbahn Boegl - FFB) with an endless coupled slab track system with precast concrete slabs, combined with continuous rail support (CRS). The main achievements of the project are:
- Noise reduction - 2 dB: based on reference measurements, which is due to the CRS.
- Reduced vibrations: for model I -11 dB and for model II -6 dB compared to ballasted track.
- Reduced stresses between the fasteners compared to ballasted track due to CRS at model I from 52% to 74% and for model II from 73% to 96%
- Computer-assisted long-term monitoring since April 2004 based on remote technology.
With the application of HIPERTRACK system components along the railway system reduced noise and vibration emissions can be reached. Therefore, expensive noise insulation or vibration-reducing structural measures in the environment can be avoided. Improved quality and geometry allows higher speed and increased utilization of the rail system. Michael Kieninger, project leader of Fraunhofer LBF: "As a result of reduced maintenance and attendance decreased life cycle costs for slab track systems can be expected".
