Abstract:
The presentation addresses two related questions on developments of personal networks in old age. The first question is to what extent old people are isolated and whether their 'social world' shrinks in the aging process. Explanations are sought in the loss of social roles and in the loss of health. Because there are several partial networks with specific functions (children, other kin, friends, neighbors, other non-kin) the empirical findings will be presented for these networks specifically. The second question is whether current cohorts of older adults differ from previous cohorts with respect to the network composition and consequences in terms of loneliness. More specifically the hypothesis is that there is a decline of family functions and importance, while the network of friends has become more important in later cohorts.
