Wissenschaftler des Max-Planck-Instituts für experimentelle Medizin klären die Funktion von Cholesterin in den Myelinmembranen der Nervenfasern
Welche Funktion übt Cholesterin in den Myelinmembranen aus? Dieser Frage sind jetzt Forscher vom Göttinger Max-Planck-Institut für experimentelle Medizin nachgegangen. Myelin umhüllt als dicht gepackter Membranstapel Nervenfasern und bewirkt so deren elektrische Isolation. An gentechnisch veränderten Mäusen konnten die Neurogenetiker beweisen, dass der Einbau von Cholesterin für die Bildung von Myelin unentbehrlich ist. Das fast vollständige Fehlen von Myelin in den mutanten Versuchstieren führte zu ständigem Zittern und Koordinationsstörungen und bei einem Drittel der Mutanten sogar zum Tod.
