ESMT ADVANCES CASE STUDY DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL / EASTERN EUROPE AND RUSSIA

Michael Wieland Corporate Communications
european school of management and technology (esmt)

The European School of Management and Technology (esmt), a member of the CEEMAN network, hosted the first CEEMAN meeting on case development April 7-8, 2005, on the esmt campus in Berlin. The workshop provided deans and case writers from Central European, Eastern European and Russian business schools with the platform to discuss current and future needs for cases and research in the area.

Berlin. This first meeting hosted by esmt, launches a series of esmt research and case initiatives supporting business school programs in CEEMAN member schools, and at esmt the new fulltime MBA program, starting January 2006, as well as esmt's numerous executive education programs.

33 participants from 11 countries came together to discuss main business issues in the participant's countries of origin and set the tone for an overall research design for case writing with a distinct Central and Eastern European focus. The meeting identified the necessary individual and institutional contributions for the realization of an annual development workshop aimed at the acceleration of cases dealing with current business issues of local and international companies operating across the region.

Case studies are an important basis of modern Business School teaching, connecting theory with practical business problems, making them a useful tool for interactive, engaging and discussion-based learning while encouraging exchanges about best practices and problem-solving strategies.

All of the participants enjoyed their stay in Berlin, framed by a diverse cultural program that facilitated additional fruitful discussions in a less formal environment. The results of the meeting will be published soon.
