Stuttgart im November 1995 - Die Heizung ist zwar nicht fur die Sonnenbank zu empfehlen, aber dafur gut fur die Umwelt. Denn der beste Katalysator bringt nichts, solange er kalt ist. Der Abgasreiniger mus eine Temperatur von rund 300 Grad Celsius haben, bevor er seine Wirkung voll entfaltet. So vergehen nach dem Kaltstart ein bis zwei Minuten vermeidbaren Schadstoffaustoses fanden Daimler-Benz- Forscher. Ihre Losung: Eine spezielle Brennerheizung, die im Auspuffrohr steckt, zundet funf Sekunden, bevor der Motor gestartet werden kann. Diese kurze Zeit ist ausreichend genug, um beim Motor start die erforderliche Katalysatortemperatur von 300 Grad Celsius zu erreichen.
