Modern textile products promise additional functions such as antimicrobial effect, reduction of odours or skin care. However, it is important for both manufacturers and consumers that the promised effectiveness and, above all, the safety of this type of finish can be evaluated objectively. The Hohenstein Institutes offer a wide range of interdisciplinary laboratory tests which enable reliable statements to be made regarding the effectiveness and risk potential of biofunctional textiles. In order to evaluate the skin compatibility, the cytotoxicity and sensitisation and irritation potential of the textiles is tested. The tests for this are based to a large extent on EN ISO 10993 for the biological evaluation of the safety of medical devices. Test methods which are individually tailored to the intended purpose of the product are also used to evaluate the transfer of active substances for cosmetically and medically active textiles under practical conditions. Several quantitative and qualitative determination methods are also available to prove the antimicrobial and antimycotic effect of textile finishes. Using different wound models (e.g. based on cell cultures), the improved healing of wounds using textile dressings can be proven on the laboratory scale and their adhesive strength can be compared to that of conventional compresses. General hygienic and microbiological tests on textiles complete the range of services offered by the Hohenstein Institutes.
