Testing and certification of all types of textile products

Rose-Marie Riedl Marketing und Business Development
Hohensteiner Institute

The Hohenstein Institutes offer a range of recognised tests and certifications for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products. As part of the laboratory tests according to the UV Standard 801, the amount of UV-radiation which is able to penetrate clothing and shade textiles onto human skin is measured. This is used to determine a protection factor which corresponds to the data given on cosmetic sunscreens, and states how long you can safely stay out when wearing the successfully tested textiles without damaging your health. The measurements enable a realistic evaluation of the UV-protective effect of products, as, in contrast to other test standards, the stresses and strains on the material due to wear (wetting, stretching, wear, care treatments) are also taken into consideration.
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is the world's leading label for textiles tested for harmful substances, and was developed in conjunction with the Hohenstein Institutes in 1992. The extensive tests include substances which are regulated by law, substances which are harmful to health, and parameters included as a precaution to safeguard health. The test criteria are binding internationally and are updated and extended on an annual basis. The intended use of the textile determines the extent of tests required: the more intensively a product comes into contact with the skin, the more stringent the requirements which must be met.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
