Potsdam. Young IT scientists from all over the world have until July 15th to apply for a spot at the new "Research School" opening at the Hasso Plattner Institute (http://www.hpi-web.de) on October 1st. Each of the nine young scientists will receive a three-year scholarship including a monthly stipend of between 1400 and 1800 euros to pursue research in "Service-oriented Systems Engineering". Students who have already achieved a doctorate or who wish to acquire one are invited to apply. The young scientists at the new international Research School will be guided by six professors from the HPI.
"Service-oriented computing is based on an idea that has emerged as a result of the most recent developments on the World Wide Web", explains Prof. Christoph Meinel, HPI's Scientific Director. Complex software applications are replaced by agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. The advantages for industry are enormous as business procedures are guided by an external processing concept rather than by internal software program applications. When procedures are changed and/or when new services are added, existing applications no longer need to be reprogrammed - thanks to the new service systems they can be reconfigured using existing tools. This cuts costs and allows for increased flexibility.
As Meinel notes, the research topic "Service-oriented Systems Engineering" will act as a link between all HPI departments and create a close and fruitful interdisciplinary cooperation among the different groups at the institute. "Each department will devote itself to one current topic in the field of IT Systems Engineering. The topic must have potential both in academic research and industrial application", says Meinel. Research School scholars will enjoy regular events such as lectures, seminars and workshops. The scholarships are designed for "highly-motivated and talented computer scientists and IT engineers from all over the world who are interested in pursuing current research topics and achieving pioneer work in their field". The stipends of 1400 (PhD students) and 1800 euros (postdocs) are not subject do tax deductions.
