First Japanese-German Conference on Regenerative Medicine in Mie

Dr. Heinrich Cuypers Unternehmenskommunikation
BioCon Valley Initiative

    2006 next conference in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Friday, September 9th until Saturday, September 10th 2005, the 1st Japanese - German Conference on Regenerative Medicine will be held in the Japanese Prefecture Mie. Top German experts from research institutions and companies active in the young field of "regenerative medicine" will participate in this scientific meeting. Speakers will include scientists from Hannover, Teltow, Leipzig, Berlin, Mainz, Greifswald, Rostock and Stuttgart. The scientific program was compiled on German side under the auspices of BioCon Valley's Chairman of the Board Prof. Horst Klinkmann, the Director of the Department for Cardiac Surgery of the University of Rostock, Prof. Gustav Steinhoff as well as the spokesperson of the program "Regenerative Medicine" at the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres and Head of the Institute for Polymer Research at the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht GmbH in Teltow, Prof. Andreas Lendlein. The Japanese auspices was taken on by Prof. Akira Mizoguchi of the Institute of Genomics and Regenerative Biology at Mie University and Prof. Masakatsu Nishikawa of the Department of Hematology at Mie University Hospital. The scientific conference is official part of the German-Japanese Year 2005/2006 and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Within the scope of the conference, top-experts will discuss concrete options for increased German - Japanese cooperation in the field of regenerative medicine, a highly competitive and seminal research and development field worldwide. Currently the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres is establishing its own research program, which also contains the establishment of junior scientist groups. In cooperation with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Helmholtz Association develops and manages joint activities, which also provide for international cooperation. The Institute for Polymer Research in Teltow is dedicated to the development of biomaterials for the application in regenerative medicine, which are subject to entirely new requirements. On special invitation by the Japanese External Trade Organization JETRO, General Manager Prof. Hans-Georg Neumann of DOT GmbH, Rostock, will participate in the conference in order to intensify the company's economic relations on the Japanese market.

Based on the successful cooperation between the bioregions Medical Valley Mie, Japan and BioCon Valley, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 2003, BioCon Valley was commissioned as the conference organiser. The scientific conference is part of a cooperation agreement signed between BioCon Valley and the Japanese bioregion Medical Valley in May 2004, and between the University of Rostock and the Japanese University of Mie in October 2004. In 2006 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be the host for the next conference.

"The conference is a consistent continuation of all efforts to develop Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to an attractive location for biotechnology and life sciences", emphasized BioCon Valley's General Manager Dr. Wolfgang Blank, who had spent two years at the University of Kyoto on a research assignment. "Here we benefit from the deep seated tradition Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has developed since the mid 70ies in research and development in the field of regenerative medicine."
