Cell biologist Prof. Achim Leutz from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch has been elected as member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in Heidelberg. Together with Professor Carmen Birchmeier, Professor Walter Birchmeier and Dr. Thomas Sommer, he is the fourth MDC-researcher in this renowned organization. Prof. Leutz investigates the mechanisms which lead to the onset of leukemias.
EMBO has about 1,200 elected members, among them 38 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize. The organization elects new members annually on the basis of proven excellence in research. Established in 1964 and representing 17 European countries and Israel, EMBO's aim is to promote bioscience in Europe. In 1974, it established the European Molecular Biology Laboratoy (EMBL). EMBO also publishes the EMBO Journal.
