Cell biologists and cancer researchers Prof. Walter Birchmeier and Prof. Achim Leutz from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch have been elected as members of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in Heidelberg. Together with Professor Carmen Birchmeier and Dr. Thomas Sommer the MDC has now for members in this renowned organization. Prof. Walter Birchmeier, who is also Scientific Director of the MDC, investigates the mechanisms of the development of cancer and metastases, Prof. Leutz researches the mechanisms which lead to the onset of leukemias.
EMBO has about 1,200 elected members, among them 38 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize. The organization elects new members annually on the basis of proven excellence in research. Established in 1964 by 17 European countries and Israel, EMBO's aim is to promote bioscience in Europe. In 1974, it established the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). EMBO also publishes three journals, one of them is the EMBO Journal.
