Digital Ultrasound - SonoPilot®-thermo

Dipl.-Phys. Annette Maurer Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Biomedizinische Technik IBMT

Integrated System for Navigation and Therapy Control of thermal Ablation Procedures.

Presented at MEDICA 2005 in Hall 10 Stand F 05.

At MEDICA 2005 researchers from Fraunhofer-Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT present an integrated system for navigation and therapy control of thermal ablation procedures (SonoPilot®-thermo). The system is based on digital ultrasound technology which permits to extract quantititative tissue parameters for the use in navigation and therapy control. The system was developed in the context of the Center of Competence MOTIV, funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, at Fraunhofer IBMT where the ultrasound department offers in four groups with over 35 employees and over 18 years of experience the entire competence for the solution of medical, biotechnological and technical development tasks in the ultrasound technology sector. The development offer reaches from consultation and feasibility studies over functional models and prototype development up to certified product development and evaluation. The know-how of the department allows the in house development of all individual system components such as transducers, electronics and signal processing up to the sensor manufacturing.

The value of a technology is determined by the range and number of possible applications. In this context applies: The more simply the basic principle, the more successfully the technology. The use of mechanical waves in the non-audible range - ultrasound - is a convincing example for this.

Discovered in the outgoing 19th century, it took a while until the technology matured to today's meaning, due to the necessary real time signal processing which was only developed later. After the development of first, nowadays well established, applications such as sonar for the detection of ships and mines and the characterization of materials in the industrial sector, ultrasound meanwhile serves for over 50 years as the most frequently used imaging modality for medical diagnostics. Routine investigations in most diverse medical areas, in particular obstetrics, are only made possible by the non-invasiveness and the low costs of this technology. Apart from this the robustness and scaling of this technology ensure for a constantly rising spectrum of applications even today. Smallest structures like individual biological cells can be imaged and characterized within the submicrometer range, minimal sample quantities can be analyzed and samples and particles in the nanometer range can be carefully manipulated by a scaling of the frequency. By a scaling of the power chemical and biotechnological processes can be affected and accelerated and ultrasonic waves can be used for medical therapeutic treatments. A trend for all applications thereby is the use of ever higher integrated, finer resolving systems and the combination of supplementing technologies as well as the extension of pure diagnostic
imaging systems to such systems that support the surgeon during the execution of therapeutic measures.

For minimal invasive treatments such as the thermal ablation of soft tissue tumors integrated systems are needed, which give more information and thus more security to the physician. This relates to all sectors for interventions such as diagnostics, planning, navigation, control and monitoring of the therapy. For the development of such systems imaging technologies are indispensable and in particular the non-invasive, real time and economical ultrasound imaging modality plays a leading role.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
