The technical-scientific director of Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) mbH in Germany, Lothar Hahn, was appointed Chairman of the International Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on 15 December 2005 in Paris. He takes over the chair of Ashok Thadani, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The CSNI of the OECD NEA is an international committee made up of senior scientists and engineers with broad responsibilities for safety technology and research programmes. It was set up in 1973 to develop and co-ordinate the activities of the NEA concerning the technical aspects of the design, construction and operation of nuclear installations insofar as they affect the safety of such installations. From the very beginning GRS was represented in this committee by its former technical-scientific director Professor Dr. Dr. E. h. Adolf Birkhofer, who has been CSNI Chairman from 1978 to 1982.
About GRS
GRS is a scientific-technical expert and research organisation. Its task is, assessing and improving the safety of technical facilities and further developing the protection of man and the environment from the technical hazards and risks involved in such facilities. GRS activities are mainly focused on the area of nuclear safety and waste management, where it is Germany's leading expert institution. GRS acquires its experience base also from many bilateral co-operation agreements and in the participation in numerous activities and bodies of the OECD and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). One of the most important bodies in this domain is the CSNI of the OECD NEA.

The Committee's purpose is to foster international co-operation in nuclear safety amongst OECD member countries. The CSNI's main tasks are
o to exchange technical information and to promote collaboration between research, development, engineering and regulatory organisations;
o to review operating experience and the state of knowledge on selected topics of nuclear safety technology and safety assessment;
o to initiate and conduct programmes to overcome discrepancies, develop improvements and research consensus on technical issues; and
o to promote the co-ordination of work that serves to maintain competence in nuclear safety matters, including the establishment of joint undertakings.
The Committee focuses primarily on existing nuclear power reactors and other nuclear installations; it also considers the safety implications of scientific and technical developments of new reactor designs.
