Computer scientists from Saarbrücken automatically locate errors in big computer programs

CeBIT 2006: Automatic error rasing in the program Eclipse

When big software fails usually only one of a thousand codes is erring. IT-specialists spend nights in front of monitors to detect this single error. Andreas Zeller professor for software engineering at Saarland University, and his team no longer struggle with these problems. For the program Eclipse, the computer scientists have developed a software that exactly determines the sparsely befehlszeilen causing errors. So far at international software engineering no other program exists operating more accurate. The software is going to be introduced at CeBIT 2006 at the Saarland research stand (hall 9, stand B 43 ) and can be downloaded online.

Why does my program fail? The search for error cause is not only nerve-racking but can also make a difference of 50 per cent of development costs. Therefore Professor Andreas Zeller has educed tools that automatically detect errors in big software.
At CeBIT 2006 he is introducing new media for the program Eclipse tracking down error causes fully automatic referring to inputs, to program sequences or to final modifications. When scanning multiple 100.000 codes following result could be reported for instance: "error cause is the modification in row 45 from last Monday" .

Professor Andreas Zeller, supervisor of the research project, takes many advantages of it: user like Karlsruhe web.de can easily locate errors and fix them rapidly. The media can be downloaded for free under
    http://www.st.cs.uni-sb.de/eclipse/

The media for error tracing is going to be introduced at CeBIT in Hannover from March 9th till 15th, 2006 at the Saarland research stand (hall 9, stand B 43). In line with the "future talk forum" of CeBIT (hall 9, stand A 40) Professor Dr. Andreas Zeller is giving a lecture on Friday, march 10, 14:20 (in German) about the issue "Why does my program fail? - automatic error tracing" and he is also telling about the issue: "Contents of software archives - from Mozilla to Microsoft". The lecture (in German) is going to take place on March 10 at 10:20. Interviews are possible in English.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
