Geschäftsführender Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts für Quantenoptik ist Träger des diesjährigen königlich-spanischen "Prinz von Asturien-Preises für wissenschaftliche und technische Forschung"
Am 24. Mai 2006 gab die Jury der Prinz-von-Asturien-Stiftung die Verleihung des hochrangigen Preises an Prof. Ignacio Cirac bekannt. Cirac erhält den Preis "for his worldwide leadership in proposing and developing quantum computing, a new science of the 21st century that comes from combining two of the most outstanding creations of the 20th century. On one hand, quantum physics, which explains the behaviour of matter at atomic and subatomic levels, and on the other hand, information theory, which describes data processing, storage and transmission. Der Preis ist mit 50.000 Euro dotiert. Der Preisträger erhält ferner eine Skulptur des spanischen Künstlers Joan Miró, ein Diplom sowie Insignien.
