Bartlomiej Arendarski from Poland has been researching at the Fraunhofer IFF in Magdeburg for a short time now. The twenty-five year old is the first up-and-coming researcher at the local Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC in the Marie Curie Program, a training program for young researchers supported by the EU. A total of 1.1 million euros has been earmarked for young guest researchers residing in Magdeburg.
Bartlomiej Arendarski from around Cracow learned about the Marie Curie Program from a friend. With his degree in electrical engineering and telecommunications from Poland's second largest technical university in Wroclaw, the likeable young man from Poland brings an outstanding background to the program. Arendarski earned his Master's last year, specializing in digital transmission. His Master's thesis on "The Intelligent Buildings: Systems for Data Acquisition and Utilization" closely relates to his current research activities at the Fraunhofer IFF. "My thesis not only supplies valuable impulses for the residents but also the builders of so-called 'intelligent buildings'. My work is aimed at optimizing highly complex security and monitoring systems as well as the electricity and plumbing in an intelligent building so that functionality increases overall and costs are cut."
At the Fraunhofer IFF Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC, Arendarski is working on research in the field of virtual process control. The Polish specialist is actively involved in an industry project on maintenance work on a transformer weighing several tons, which researchers from the Fraunhofer IFF are first testing in a virtual environment rather than reality. More or less like a preliminary stage, this process ultimately makes maintenance on the transformer more effective and more cost effective. For this and other projects, his first weeks at the Fraunhofer IFF, Arendarski had to learn to use a special visualization tool the Fraunhofer's own Virtual Development and Training Platform or VDT Platform for short. In the small team of researchers in which he works, he is viewed as the expert for electrical engineering because of his academic background from his native country. His colleagues are not only Germans; the young Pole also works together with two Jordanians and one Chinese. Along with his new colleagues, he will soon be moving into the new building of the Fraunhofer IFF Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC. This expansion of the institute in Magdeburg's Port of Science will be officially dedicated on November 22, 2006.
Bartlomiej Arendarski is living on the campus of Otto von Guericke University and is happy in his student dorm with some 100 residents. In his free time, he explores the city with his Hungarian rommate. "I especially like the atmosphere around the banks of the Elbe and Petriförder. I also think Magdeburg's old, majestic cathedral and other churches are great." Along with the Hundertwasser House, Arendarski also likes Hasselbachplatz where he enjoys ordering a good beer and his favorite dish, potato salad and schnitzel, in one of the pleasant restaurants. In the coming weeks, the young researcher also intends to explore the zoo and the clubs around Hasselbachplatz.
In a short time, the young researcher has not only settled into the city very well but the Fraunhofer IFF too. In the Marie Curie Program, he intends to "contribute concrete solutions between theory and practice." His primary goal during his residence at the Fraunhofer IFF is however, "to expand my range of knowledge as a researcher of virtual process control and to get to know other fellow researchers."
The objective of ResearchTraining@vdtc is to give twelve up-and-coming researchers from inside and outside Europe the opportunity at the Fraunhofer IFF to collaborate on international research projects or to gather practical experience industry projects over four years. One to three-year stays are being offered, which, depending on the duration and the researcher's interests, can be concluded with a Master's or doctorate. The thematic focus of the program covers the field of applied virtual engineering. Three thematic fields can be selected: Virtual product development, virtual process control and virtual-interactive training. Along with attending courses and collaborating on projects, trainees also perform research in the Fraunhofer IFF LogmotionLab and its VR lab. Training is supplemented by modules on soft skills and languages and by conference attendance. The training program is conducted in cooperation with the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and regional industry partners.
