Dr. Sonja Hegasy Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO)
Geisteswissenschaftliche Zentren Berlin e.V. (GWZ)

'Islamic Movements as Civil Society Actors?'
Public talk and discussion with political activists from Indonesia and Malaysia
Moderator: Dr. Farish A. Noor, ZMO

    Venue: GWZ-ZMO
    Jägerstrasse 10/11 (Room 006), 10117 Berlin
    Date: Saturday, 25th November 2006, 6 pm

Islamic movements are among the most visible actors in the public domain in many Muslim societies today. They participate in activities like healthcare, education, local governance. Yet by definition Islamic movements are also sectarian as they involve only Muslim participants and members. Can they nevertheless be thought of as agents of civil society and the democratisation process? Can they play a positive role as agents of social change, reform and democratisation? Or do Islamic movements contribute to further sectarianism in society and do they have to undergo a radical re-thinking of their role and purpose?
The ZMO invited members of Muslim parties and NGOs from Malaysia and Indonesia to discuss this issue.

    Speakers:
Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad (Malaysian Islamic Party)
Muhammad Budi Setiawan (Islamic Justice and Welfare Party of Indonesia)
Dr. Muhammad Farid Shahran (Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement)
