Since 11 September 2001 Southeast Asia has been labelled as the 'Second Front' in the 'War on Terror'. This has been accompanied by an escalation of religiously-inspired violence in parts of the region and the crackdown on many Islamist movements. Human Rights NGOs and International watchdog bodies have argued that in many cases legitimate Islamic movements have been targeted by the governments of Southeast Asia; but how real is the threat of religious extremism in the region today? Are the Islamist movements of Malaysia and Indonesia being unfairly targeted to serve a broader international agenda?
The forum invites human rights lawyers as well as Muslim activists from Malaysia and Indonesia to discuss these issues.
