Der heutige Fachbereich Physik der Universität Dortmund nahm im Herbst 1970 den Lehrbetrieb auf. Erster Inhaber des Lehrstuhls Theoretische Physik I war bis zum Sommer 1976 Prof. Dr. Albert Schmidt. Sein Nachfolger ist Prof. Dr. Hellmut Keiter.
In den Gründungstagen der Abteilung Physik an der Dortmunder Universität waren neben dem Theoretiker Schmidt die Experimentalphysiker Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bonse und Prof. Dr. Dietmar Fröhlich die ersten Lehrstuhlinhaber.
Keiters Lehrstuhl ist jetzt zum Semesterbeginn mit der Berufung des C3-Professors Prof. Dr. A. Klümper neu verstärkt worden.
Keiter hebt als besondere Charakteristika der Dortmunder Physik ihre Homogenität und interne Kooperation hervor. Der Integrierte Kurs I bis IV wird den Studierenden der Anfangssemester beispielsweise jeweils gemeinsam von einem der Theorieprofessoren und der Experimentalphysik-Professoren angeboten.
