Fraunhofer IESE participates in German-French Research Partnership

Dr. Frank Seelisch Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Experimentelles Software Engineering IESE

The joint computer science research between Germany and France is being intensified. Bilateral research has existed for years between six German and six French research institutions. Now, the German-French cooperation agreement recently signed in Nancy will help to improve coordination and lead to an expansion of the topics covered.

As soon as the agreement comes into effect, the 12 partner institutes will first form a steering committee. As one of the German institutes involved, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern will be represented by its director Prof. Dr. Dieter Rombach. The first meeting of the steering committee is scheduled to take place at Fraunhofer IESE in Kaiserslautern during the second week of March.

In the future, researchers of the involved institutions will increase their scientific collaboration in joint information and communications research projects, and will thereby also be able to improve the coordination of joint applications to European calls for proposals.

Thus, the transnational region of Wallonia, Luxembourg, Saarland, and Lorraine has the potential of becoming a center of excellence in the area of computer science. For example, researchers of the involved institutes are already working on algorithms for the automatic recognition of handwriting and speech, as well as on multi-language and multi-modal systems.

    The German institutions involved are:

German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH),
Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE),
    Max Planck Institute for Informatics,
Max Planck Institute for Software Systems,
    University of Kaiserslautern,
    Saarland University.

    The French partners are:

Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique,
Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique,
    Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine,
    Université Henri Poincaré Nancy 1,
    Université Nancy 2,
    Université Paul Verlaine de Metz.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE

Fraunhofer IESE in Kaiserslautern currently has 199 employees who perform research in the areas of software development, software quality management, and software competence management. Together with its sister institute in the USA, Fraunhofer IESE offers processes, methods, and techniques for developing software-based systems according to engineering-style principles. In doing so, it follows an empirical approach: Through proven, innovative solutions, products based on software can be brought to the market with a measurably higher degree of efficiency.

The customers of Fraunhofer IESE come from domains where products are dominated by software: automotive and transportation systems, telecommunications, telematics and service providers, medical systems, as well as information systems and applications in the public sector. The institute provides support to companies of any size - from international corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises. The public sector also plays an important role as a project partner.

Fraunhofer IESE, which was founded in 1996, is directed by Prof. Dieter Rombach and Prof. Peter Liggesmeyer. It is one of 58 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which, as the largest applied research organization in Europe, contributes to national and international competitiveness.

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
