On Feb. 22nd 2007 BioCon Valley together with the life science initiatives Medicon Valley Academy Kopenhagen/Lund and NORGENTA Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein realised a workshop in Schwerin on the upcoming "Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)" for competitive pharmaceutical development.
The workshop was started by an overview of the funding policy of EU in the FP7 and the detailed planning of the IMI presented by EU representative Arnd Hoeveler, head of unit "Biotechnology for Health".
The overview was followed by concrete examples of cooperation in the field of drug screening and innovative developments for neurodegenerative diseases given by Dr. Erich Greiner, Evotec AG Hamburg, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Stoll and Prof. Dr. Arndt Rolfs, CELISCA Centre for Life Science Automation at the University of Rostock.
More than 70 representatives from industry, start up companies and academia were attending the meeting and used the opportunity to get informed on the IMI. The proposed EC contribution to the IMI will be 1 billion € for the period of FP7 (2007-2013). According to the roadmap the first calls will be open in December 2007. The participants appreciated the event as a chance to hear from first hand experts the aim and procedures of IMI. The workshop was an exemplary result of theme specific transnational activities which were easily realised under the umbrella of ScanBalt, the network of networks in Northern Europe.
Arnd Hoeveler was quite convinced of the network activities in Northern Europe which will boost cooperation in science and industry stating that "ScanBalt is one step ahead in Europe".
