Unter der Leitung von Professor Rupert Hölzl und PD Dr. Dieter Kleinböhl vom Otto-Selz-Institut für Angewandte Psychologie der Universität Mannheim beschäftigt sich ein interdisziplinärer Forschungsverbund mit den Grundlagen der Körperwahrnehmung und möglichen industriellen und klinischen Anwendungen.
Anlässlich des Projektbeginns findet am Freitag, 9. März, ein gemeinsamer Kick-off-Workshop an der Universität Mannheim statt. Das Forschungsvorhaben mit dem Titel SOMAPS wird von der EU in den kommenden drei Jahren mit insgesamt zwei Millionen Euro gefördert.
Weitere Projektpartner neben dem Otto-Selz-Institut der Universität Mannheim sind das Institut für Technische Informatik an der Universität Mannheim (Prof. Reinhard Männer und Dr. Daniel Gembris), das Institut für Neuropsychologie und Klinische Psychologie (Prof. Herta Flor) am Zentralinstitut für Seelische Gesundheit, Mannheim, sowie die Universitäten Aalborg in Dänemark (Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction, Prof. Lars Arendt-Nielsen), Twente in den Niederlanden (Prof. Jan R. Buitenweg) und die Fernuniversität Madrid (Prof. Soledad Ballesteros). Die Wissenschaftler möchten gemeinsam das Verständnis von Vorgängen vertiefen, die an der Wahrnehmung des eigenen Körpers beteiligt sind. SOMAPS steht als Abkürzung für "Multilevel systems analysis and modeling of Somatosensory, Memory, and Affective maPs of body and objects in multidimensional Subjective space".
