Schwedischer Forschungsrat - The Swedish Research Council

11th International Congress of the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology. The world's leading experts in psychiatric epidemiology will gather at the beginning of May in Göteborg in Sweden. The congress will present results from such issues as sex related violence and the risk of suicide in women, the significance of junk food for behavioural problems in 7-year-olds, and the increasing incidence of dementia in Europe.

Other research results describe the increased incidence of psychosis in immigrants in Great Britain, the significance of poverty for child mental health in the US, and increased sick leave as a result of mental disorders in Sweden. Researchers will also present studies of how the risk for depression is affected by such factors as the work-place environment, tobacco smoking, and obesity; and the significance of mental disorders for academic results of pupils in compulsory schooling. Studies of suicide and how to prevent it will also be presented.

The congress is arranged by the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology, and 300 researchers from all over the world will attend. The main theme will be globalisation and changing patterns of mental disorders across the life span.
"The programme will be very broad. Studies of mental disorders in all age groups and from all parts of the world will be presented", says Professor Ingmar Skoog at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

The congress will also deal with social factors in drug abuse, the significance of childhood for mental disorders of adults, the effect of the tsunami on mental health in India, sleep disorders and accidents in Taiwan, the coupling between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, youth alcohol abuse in Australia, the elderly and loneliness, preventing depression, and the incidence of psychosis in the population of Stockholm.

The congress will take place at the Elite Park Avenue Hotel in Göteborg, 3 - 6 May. If you want to attend, please inform us by e-mail: ifpe2007@gbg.congrex.se and specify the days you will be here.

A press conference will be held in association with the congress
