In der alternswissenschaftlichen und alternspolitischen Vortragsreihe des Deutschen Zentrums für Altersfragen (DZA), Berlin, wird Prof. Dr. Dorly J.H. Deeg(VU University Medical Centre, Institute for Research inExtramural Medicine, Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam) am 21.06.2007 um 17:30 zum Thema "Healthy old age only for the socially well-off?" referieren.

The ageing of the population, since the 1950's, stems largely from the fact that older persons are living longer. However, it is not clear from data available for the Netherlands if older per-sons are living longer and in better health. Nor is it clear if and how changes in health status differ across population groups. It is of critical importance that the supply of care services fits to the needs of this growing age group. The purpose of this contribution is to provide empiri-cal data on trends in the health of the older population, as well as in their use of care ser-vices and assistive devices. Furthermore, a characterisation of functional decline is provided for subgroups of the older population according to social resources such as education level and availability of a partner. The data come from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, a large-scale nationally repre-sentative study, which started in 1992 with the general aim to examine predictors and conse-quences of changes in a wide range of aspects of daily functioning: physical, cognitive, emo-tional, and social. The cohort of initially 3107 persons aged 55-85 years was followed with 3-yearly intervals. In 2002, a new cohort of 1002 55-64-year-olds was recruited. At the most recent observation cycle the old and new cohorts were merged, and data from 2165 persons were still obtained. Each observation cycle comprises a one-and-a-half hour interview, fol-lowed by a medical interview in which also clinical measurements are performed.
