The ETH Board has named Professor Peter Chen to become Vice-President of Research at ETH Zurich. Mr. Chen, Professor of Physical Organic Chemistry, will assume office on September 1, 2007. He follows the present Vice-President, Professor Dimos Poulikakos, who is stepping down to return to research.

In a meeting taking place on August 12th, the ETH Board has named Professor Peter Chen to the managing body of ETH Zurich, the Executive Board. The American-born Peter Chen will assume the function of Vice-President responsi-ble for Research on the first of September 2007 for a term of four years. ETH Zurich designated president, Ralph Eichler, proposed Professor Chen in a motion put forward to the ETH Board. The ETH Board is the strategic body that oversees the two Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne as well as four research institutions.

Professor Peter Chen follows Professor Dimos Poulikakos who leaves his position as Vice-President of Research to dedicate himself to research in thermodynamics. As a member of the ETH Zurich Executive Board since December 1, 2005, Dimos Poulikakos contributed significantly to scientific research in Switzerland with the opening of the new Department of System Biology (D-BSSE) in Basel and the establishment of the Centre Environment and Sustainability (CCES) in the ETH domain.

Born in 1960 in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States, Peter Chen has been a Full Professor of Physical Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB) at ETH Zurich since September 1, 1994. His research has opened new perspectives in chemical reaction mechanisms which, among other things, play an important role in the development of new catalysts for the production of medicines and high-performance materials. The recipient of international recognition in research and teaching, Peter Chen's body of work of more than 90 publications has been printed in renowned professional journals. He also holds several patents. In 2005 Peter Chen was awarded the 'Golden Owl', a yearly prize bestowed by the students of ETH Zurich upon that professor who in their view has performed outstandingly in teaching.

Peter Chen has a long history of presiding over different committees and boards, academically and privately. He heads the Research Commission at ETH Zurich, and serves as president of the Alfred Werner Foundation in Basel, Switzerland, a private foundation which awards grants to young Swiss chemists. Peter Chen is a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss specialty chemicals company, Clariant, located in Muttenz, Basel.
