Für seine Pionierarbeit im Bereich der Soziobiologie und der Biodiversitätsforschung sowie für seinen langjährigen Einsatz zur Erhaltung der Vielfalt des Lebens in der Natur verleiht die Fakultät für Biologie der Universität Würzburg dem Wissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Edward O. Wilson von der Harvard University, Cambridge (USA), die Ehrendoktorwürde.
Der öffentliche Festakt beginnt am Mittwoch, 5. Juli, um 14.00 Uhr in der Neubaukirche. Nach Grußworten von Universitätspräsident Prof. Dr. Theodor Berchem und Dekan Prof. Dr. Werner Goebel hält Prof. Dr. Bert Hölldobler die Laudatio. Er und der Geehrte, der bereits mehrfach die Doktorwürde ehrenhalber verliehen bekam, haben zusammen das Buch "The Ants" (Die Ameisen) verfasst und wurden dafür mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnet. Auf die Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde folgt der Festvortrag von Prof. Wilson in englischer Sprache. Er befasst sich mit dem Thema "The Relation between Biology and the Humanities".
