A Berlin Symposium on Perspectives of Bioenergy for Rural Development

    4 October 2007, 5:00 p.m.

    Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften,
    Leibniz-Saal, Markgrafenstraße 38, 10117 Berlin

Driven by concerns of petroleum scarcity and the environmental impact of fossil energy use, the supply of fuels, heat, and electricity based on biomass has mushroomed in recent years. Bioenergy has given rise to a global renaissance of agricultural and forestry commodities that do not only improve the profitability of farm and forest enterprises, but can also be instrumental for the integrated development of marginalised rural areas.
However, bioenergy is not a panacea of economic, environmental, and social benefits. Critics point out damages to soils and biodiversity, the displacement of food production, exorbitant CO2 abatement costs, and low energy efficiencies. Hence, there is a strong need to direct bioenergy towards sustainability.

This Berlin Symposium is a joint activity of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. It intends to bring together scientists, practitioners, and political decision-makers and to increase awareness of the potential impact that bioenergy brings to the development of rural areas.
Sweden is a leader in this endeavor: It takes a key position in renewable energy use in Europe and strives to become completely independent from fossil energy resources by 2020. Moreover, it has innovative bioenergy enterprises, distinguished research institutions and extensive farmlands and forests.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
