    IIASA Appoints New Council Chairman

    Laxenburg, Austria - 7 July 1997 - Professor Dr. Kurt L. Komarek of the Austrian Academy of Sciences has been appointed Council Chairman of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria.

    IIASA is a non-profit, international research organization that conducts policy-oriented research stressing the human dimensions of global change. It is supported by 16 National Member Organizations (NMOs), who each have a representative on IIASA's Council. The Council determines the Institute's overall research and management policy and direction.

    Professor Komarek joined the IIASA Council in June 1991 representing the Austrian NMO, the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He was formerly Vice-Chairman of the Council and serves on IIASA's Finance, Executive and Membership Committees.

    Professor Komarek received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Vienna. He has taught at New York University as well as the University of Vienna, where he became president in the late 1970s. He also has served as president of the Austrian Science Foundation and was a member of the Austrian Council for Science and Research. Currently he is Chairman of the Electoral Commission of the European Science Foundation.

    Professor Komarek has won numerous awards for his research and has authored more than 120 articles in American, German and Austrian specialist journals.

    The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg, Austria) is a non-governmental research institution sponsored by a consortium of National Member Organizations in 16 nations. The Institute's research focuses on sustainability and the human dimensions of global change. The studies are international and interdisciplinary, providing timely and relevant information and options for the scientific community, policy makers and the public.
