52. Deutsche Pflanzenschutztagung in München
In der EU sind bisher 1666 Freisetzungen von 2277 gentechnischen Organismen beantragt worden, davon 298 Resistenzen von Pflanzen gegen Insekten. Hiervon war der größte Teil mit 216 Pflanzen durch Bt-Toxingene verändert worden; das sind die Gene, die in Bacillus thuringiensis ( B.t ) ein Toxin gegen Insekten hervorrufen.

Mais war europaweit eindeutig die bevorzugte Pflanze bei der Insektenresistenz mit 221 Veränderungen, gefolgt von Kartoffel (27), Baumwolle (15), Tomate (10). Außerdem wurden gentechnisch verändert: Apfel, Aubergine, Kaffee, Kohl, Pappel, Raps, Reis und Zuckerrübe. Gentechnisch veränderter Mais ist in Europa bereits auf dem Markt.
