BAM will display four new reference materials for chemically testing acrylamide in crispbread, sulphur in petrol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and alloys in batteries at the ANALYTICA fair, ERM booth 342 in Hall A3. These reference materials have been certified by BAM and put on the market by the European Reference Materials Programme ERM®.
The reference material ERM®-BD 272 is called Acrylamide in crispbread and it can be used to reliably determine this poisonous substance in dry bread. Strong heating (e.g. baking, deep-frying) can produce acrylamide in food. Ever since acrylamide was discovered in food, industry and legislators have been interested to know how it is generated. Acrylamide can cause cancer in animals and experts believe that it is probably the same in humans.
The sulphur content of petrol must be shown from 2009. The European Union's Directive 2003/17/EG demands that petrol with a maximum sulphur content of 10 mg/kg must be available in all member states. Laboratories can use the reference material ERM®-EF213 to analyse sulphur content and ensure adherence to the limiting value.
The reference material ERM®-CC013a functions as a standard for analysing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). PAHs belong to the most common organic pollutants in contaminated sites. ERM®-CC013a is certified for PAH content in accordance with the EPA list (US Environmental Protection Agency) and functions as a quality control standard both in gas and liquid chromatographic methods in standard laboratories.
The composition of an alloy in batteries can be determined using spark emission spectrometry or X-ray fluorescence analysis. The new reference material ERM®-EB103 can be used to reliably calibrate these analysis devices. It has been produced together with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, Raw Materials and Environmental Technology (Gesellschaft für Bergbau, Metallurgie, Rohstoff- und Umwelttechnik).
The ERM® programme introduced at ANALYTICA covers other reference materials of the three partner institutes BAM, IRMM (Belgium) and LGC (Great Britain) for analysing e.g. iron and steel and non-ferrous metals, environmental and food analysis, analysis of porous solids, polymer analysis as well as most diverse special high technology applications. Certified reference materials provide the calibration materials for analytical processes. They thus ensure reliable and correct results of chemical analyses from sampling through measurement to final evaluation.
