A new technique for measuring light has been developed by Mid Sweden University in Sweden. The technique consists of a new type of position-sensitive detectors and of extremely small, compact, and cost-efficient spectrometers.
"These new position-sensitive detectors can be used to measure the position of an incident point of light on a surface. This is done with great precision and rapidity," says Henrik Andersson, a doctoral candidate in electronics. Both one- and two-dimensional detectors have been developed. It has also been important to be able to use the new technology together with silicon technology, which is the present standard in the production of electronic circuits of various types.
Tiny, compact, and cost-efficient spectrometers have also been developed for use in the processing industry. A spectrometer is used to determine the wave length of light, what we humans see as colors.
"A highly compact wedge-shaped interferometer has been developed to split the light into its wave lengths. Using a position-sensitive detector to meter the light intensity makes it possible to construct an extremely compact and cost-effective spectrometer that involves a minimum of optics," says Henrik Andersson.
