Looking into the researchers' laboratory

Dr. Ulrike Rockland Pressestelle
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing opens the gates to its Fabeckstrasse and Adlershof premises for the 'Long Night of Science' on 14 June between 5 pm and 1 am and invites everyone to participate in a little research by night. BAM's complete programme can be viewed at www.bam.de under Aktuell (New).

BAM is a departmental research institute of the Federal Republic of Germany and promotes safety in technology and chemistry. In today's life we cannot get along without technology and chemistry. Technical and chemical systems must be safe in their performance: a dyke must hold when water rises due to a storm, dangerous materials must be packed safely if they are transported over public transport systems, and allergy sufferers breathe better when analytical chemistry provides an answer to how and when flower pollens release their distressful contents and harmful substances. These are only a few of BAM's topics which will be presented at the 'Long Night of Science'.

BAM puts the emphasis on safe handling, safe storage and safe transportation of dangerous goods at this time. On the Fabeckstrasse premises the investigations undertaken for the approval of Castor containers will be explained and spectacular 9-m-drop tests will show what impact a packaging for dangerous chemical materials must tolerate, before it may be allowed on the roads. In addition, BAM will also deal with the beautiful sides of life: jewels presented by visitors can be tested for their "genuine" composition using non-destructive testing methods.

Finally, BAM will turn to the new generation on this night for scientific and vocational training. BAM's booths (only in the Fabeckstrasse) will provide information about what the new generation must bring and what BAM can offer.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
