With a joint stand at this year's ESOF (18-22 July 2008, Barcelona/Spain) Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i) is again presenting the extremely broad university and research landscape in the south west of Germany. The stand will once again highlight Baden-Württemberg's status as one of most intensely university and research focused regions in the whole of Europe.
With more than four percent of gross domestic product being invested in research and development in this sprawling state in the German Southwest, Baden-Württemberg has been an international frontrunner in this field for many years.
With over 70 institutions of higher education and more than 100 research institutions, Baden-Württemberg is home to a broad and yet highly differentiated conglomeration of research bodies which is unique in Europe and which participates in countless international cooperative projects. Alongside major research institutions such as the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft there are the 12 research institutions which operate as part of the Max Planck Society, seven Leibniz Association institutes, 14 Fraunhofer Institutes, 13 contract research institutes and international and European research institutions. Baden-Württemberg consequently covers the entire spectrum of pure and applied research right through to product-oriented applied research.
This year's ESOF will in particular provide Baden-Württemberg's Universities of Applied Sciences the opportunity to present their "Centres of Applied Sciences". These organisations involve research col-laborations between universities and other research institutions working across individual university boundaries. Relevant research topics include sustainable energy technology, autonomous service robots, photonics, computer simulation technology and signal-processing embedded systems. EU-funded projects in the fields of power engineering and quality control as well as bachelor and masters degree courses will also be presented.
The Graduate School for Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (GSaME) at the Universität Stuttgart, recently lauded as part of the initiative for excellence launched by the German government and states, will also be presenting itself to ESOF visitors. The internationally focused Graduate School operates a dual training system and offers scholarships for doctoral students from all around the world.
