EU-Bildungskommissar Ján Figel unterstützt in einem Schreiben an das CHE Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung die Bemühungen des CHE, ein europäisches Ranking exzellenter Hochschulen zu entwickeln. Bei aller Vielfalt fehle es an Orientierungsmöglichkeiten für Studierende und Nachwuchswissenschaftler im europäischen Hochschulraum, die ihnen bei der Wahl des Studienortes brauchbare, transparente und vergleichbare Informationen lieferten.
Die Europäische Kommission sei der Meinung, dass Rankings benötigt werden, welche die unterschiedlichen Bedingungen bezüglich der Sprachen, der Fächer, der Profile und der "student services" berücksichtigen und die Lehrbedingungen ebenso wie die Forschungsqualität darstellen. Das CHE Projekt liefere dazu einen wichtigen Beitrag, wie Ján Figel in seinem Schreiben andeutet.
"Today there is a wealth of information available on higher education institutions and their programmes but no compass to navigate through it. The Commission's main interest in education and training is to help member states and their institutions to improve the quality of their education and training systems and in particular to make it easier for students to make an informed choice on where and what to study, but offering accessible, transparent and comparable information.
The Commission is of the opinion that many existing rankings do not really fulfil this purpose, e.g. because they focus on research aspects rather than teaching, and on entire institutions rather than programmes and departments. In order to achieve a mapping of European higher education that provides guidance and transparency we need ranking tools that take into account the existing diverstiy in terms of languages, subject areas, profiles, student services, research and teaching quality. CHE is among the projects which are giving an important contribution towards this objective."
Mit dem erstmals Ende 2007 veröffentlichten CHE-ExcellenceRanking hatte das CHE in einem Pilotprojekt für die Fächer Biologie, Chemie, Mathematik und Physik europaweit die Hochschulen identifiziert, die herausragende Forschungsleistungen in den betrachteten Fächern bieten. Informationen über ihr Angebot für Masterstudierende und Doktoranden wurden im Rahmen des CHE-ExcellenceRankings zusammengetragen und geben interessierten Nachwuchsforschern einen Überblick über die Studienmöglichkeiten in Europa. In der nächsten Runde des ExcellenceRankings sollen die Fächer Psychologie, Politologie und VWL betrachtet werden.
Der Zuspruch der Europäischen Kommission zeigt die hohe Anerkennung der CHE-Methodik mit ihrem multidimensionalen und streng fächerspezifischen Ansatz.
