Oliver Kohlbacher vom Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik in Saarbrücken hat den mit 5000 Mark dotierten Heinz-Billing-Preis 2000 der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft erhalten.
Kohlbacher setzte sich mit seiner Biochemical Algorithms Library (BALL) gegen Forscher der Max-Planck-Institute in Heidelberg und Mainz durch.
Bei der Aufklärung des Erbguts von Lebewesen mit molekularbiologischen Methoden oder bei der Abbildung der dreidimensionalen Struktur von Proteinen erzeugen die Wissenschaftler sehr große Datenmengen. Um diese Informationsflut zu bewältigen, sind neue Programme notwendig.
BALL erlaubt es den Forschern, Programme zur Analyse und Visualisierung strukturbiologischer Daten in sehr viel kürzerer Zeit als bisher zu entwickeln.
