The ERA-Net COMPERA will organize a conference on Competence Research Centre Programmes and Policies. The conference will take place on 3 February 2009 at the Maritim Hotel in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Competence Research Centres (CRCs)
- bridge the gap between scientific and economic innovation,
- provide a collective environment for academics, industry and in some cases public services, as well as sufficient critical mass of people who can synergistically extend research and diffuse the resulting knowledge,
- are an instrument to tackle the 'European Paradox', i.e. the fact that Europe plays a leading role in the world in terms of scientific excellence and the provision of highly-skilled human capital, but largely fails to convert science-based findings and inventions into wealth-generating innovations.
CRCs achieve this through the
- pooling of knowledge,
- concentration of infrastructure,
- creation of new knowledge by performing different types of research (pre-competitive and competitive), along the same theme
- training and dissemination of knowledge towards specific target groups of involved actors in a tailor-made way.
The 2009 COMPERA Conference brings together policy makers and practitioners working in the field of CRC-programmes. It will provide a forum for the exchange of good practice, addressing
1. The Establishment of CRC programmes: Based on the experiences of the COMPERA project and the outcomes of the CREST-Working group on industry-led CRCs, preconditions and factors of success will be presented as good practice
2. The management of CRC programmes: The success of CRC programmes largely depends on the management strategies that are applied by both governing and funding bodies. The conference will highlight/ focus on issues such as "selection of CRC proposals based on expected spill-over effects", "management of second generation CRC programmes" and "international cooperation among CRCs".
3. The future of CRCs in Europe: What is the future role of CRCs in the European Research Area (ERA)? What will be future trends of CRC-related programmes? Will CRCs be influenced by current trends outside the ERA, e.g. the USA or emerging countries such as China or India?
The speakers will be CRC experts from the European Commission, researchers with track of experience with CRC-related programmes and recognised European CRC programme managers.
The conference will be free of charge and held in English.
