When we run out of oil ... RUB energy expert publishes international standard work

Dr. Josef König Pressestelle
Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Energy sector compendium now also available in English

The interest in this compact and comprehensive compendium published by Bochum Engineer Prof. Hermann-Josef Wagner demonstrates the topicality of questions regarding the worldwide energy supply and production: His book "Was sind die Energien des 21. Jahrhunderts?" [lit.: What are the Energy Sources of the 21st Century?] published two years ago in the series "Courage for Sustainability" was so successful, that a revised edition is now available in English. "Energy: The World's Race for Resources in the 21st Century" has just recently been published by Haus Publishing Limited (Great Britain).

    Clear, Compact, Drastic

"To get an idea of how long a second is, we frequently say "one thousand one" etc. silently to ourselves. How much crude oil do you think is used worldwide during this period of time? Based on the consumption figures for the year 2004, 147,000 liters [38,833 US gallons] or 147 cubic meters [1233 US barrels] or approximately seven large tank trucks full. This is an example of how the Bochum Professor for Energy Systems and Energy Economy, Hermman-Josef Wagner, drastically and clearly emphasizes the worldwide energy consumption. In this book he shows for the first time all significant developments and influences in their entirety, classified in a clear manner: In terms of content he deals with the "classical" energy sources - coal, oil and nuclear power - as well as the "hopes of the future", such as hydro-electric power, biomass, solar and wind energy. This book covers the complete range from basic knowledge on various forms of energy, the energy sector and statistics right up to management games and scenarios for tomorrow.

    Gap Closed

Hardly anything is more explosive than the energy question of the future. Consumption will continue to increase dramatically due to the population explosion; the world's political structure will be redistributed on the basis of resources and the high CO2 emissions will accelerate the climatic problems. "What we need is an issue-related account of the facts, to allow comparative categorization of individual problems" according to Prof. Wagner. The book from the RUB machine expert, which fills this gap, is now also available in English. Starting with the various forms of energy, it illustrates the resource and consumption situation worldwide and in Germany. Wagner embraces the questions of access to recourses and outlines the area of conflict between consumption and sustainable use.

    The Author

Since 2001 Prof. Hermann-Josef Wagner has held the Chair for Energy Systems and Energy Economy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr University in Bochum. The beginning of this year he received a call to the renowned German Academy of Natural Researchers "Leopoldina". The Bochum expert has already served as a consultant to the G8 Summit Conference in questions of energy efficiency and climate protection twice - in 2006 and 2007.
