EU Commission President Barroso and Indian Minister Sibal Honoured for Service to Science and International Understanding: Induction to the Honorary Senate of the Foundation Lindau Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance as part of the opening ceremony of the 59th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, which begins today. Lennart Bernadotte Medal for Nobel Laureate Werner Arber.

Today, the Foundation Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance is honouring two outstanding figures for their commitment on behalf of science and international understanding by inducting them to the Honorary Senate: José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, and Shri Kapil Sibal, the Indian Minister for Human Resource Development. The Honorary Senate is an assembly of outstanding figures in the areas of science, politics and business. Professor Wolfgang Schürer, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation, will be presenting the honours as part of the 59th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, which begins today.

As President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso has launched numerous initiatives that have strengthened ties between science and the business community. Europe has become more attractive and more competitive as a result. He has identified and repeatedly stressed the importance of science to the solution of pressing future tasks. He is particularly committed to supporting young people in Europe.
Shri Kapil Sibal has performed a great service in behalf of supporting young talent from India. As Minister of Science and Technology (until 2009), he devoted himself to establishing India as a centre for science. His focused effort to expand worldwide co-operation arrangements and international treaties is evidenced not least in the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Meetings of Nobel Laureates.

During the opening ceremony, Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Counsel for the Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, will present the Lennart Bernadotte Medal to Professor Werner Arber. The 1978 Nobel Laureate will be recognised for his long-standing personal commitment to the Meetings of Nobel Laureates. He has contributed his knowledge as an outstanding researcher to the work of the Council since 1991 and plays an active role in ongoing development of the meetings in Lindau. The Lennart Bernadotte Medal is named after the spiritus rector of the Meetings of Nobel Laureates , Count Lennart Bernadotte (1909-2004). It was first presented in 2002.

From today until 3rd July, 23 Nobel Laureates will meet in Lindau with 580 highly gifted young researchers from 67 countries at the 59th Meeting of Nobel Laureates. The meetings offer young researchers in the sciences from all over the world an opportunity to delve in greater detail into topics relevant to their research fields in direct encounters with the authorities in their disciplines. In this way, the Meetings of Nobel Laureates contribute to the establishment of international networks of scientists. This year's lectures and discussions cover a broad spectrum indeed: from the biochemistry of the living cell to the analysis of surface reactions, to new strategies for synthesis. An area of focus is the topic of sustainability and the climate.
The Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Lindau are organised by the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the Foundation Lindau Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance for the scientific disciplines of physics, chemistry and medicine or physiology. Meetings of the Laureates of The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel have been held since 2004, permanently adding a fourth discipline to the list. Interdisciplinary meetings are held every five years as well. The next of these will mark the 60th Meeting, in 2010.

Members of the Honorary Senate are: Prof. Dr. Josef Ackermann, Ernesto Bertarelli, former German President Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Roman Herzog, Professor Dr. Henning Kagermann, Malcolm Knight PhD, Pamela Mars Wright, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Joachim Milberg, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, Dres. h.c. Erwin Teufel, Dr. Dr. h.c. Daniel Vasella, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Martin Winterkorn, and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker.

In years past, the Lennart Bernadotte Medal has been awarded to the former Lord Mayor of Lindau and long-standing Vice President of the Council, Josef Steurer, Nobel Laureates Prof. Dr. Ernst Otto Fischer and Prof. Dr. Willis Eugene Lamb, Baron Stig Ramel (Director of the Nobel Foundation, 1972-1992), Michael Sohlman, Director of the Nobel Foundation since 1992), and to Prof. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Schürer, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation Nobel Prize Winners Meetings at Lake Constance.
