International Symposium "Computer Graphics - Enabling Technology for the Informaton Society"
We would like to invite you to attent the high-level International Symposium on "Computer Graphics - Enabling Technology for the Information Society" on May 28, 2001, 9:00 - 17:00 at the "Fraunhofer-Institut fuer Graphische Datenverarbeitung" in Darmstadt, Germany.
The Symposium is a major international event with speakers from industry, academy, and research who will present visions and prospects of research, development, and application of computer graphics, multimedia, and telecommunication seen from various perspectives. It will be an excellent occasion for meeting the pioneers and practitioners of computer graphics.
The four-session Symposium will have about 16 carefully chosen international speakers. Among these are Bill Buxton, Wolfgang Effelsberg, Henry Fuchs, Karl-Heinz Hoehne, Roger Hubbold, Thomas Kirste, Hans-Peter Meinzer, David Mizell, Stefan Mueller, Ken Perlin, Georg Sakas and Ulrike Spierling.
The motivation for this Symposium has derived from the fact that computer graphics is currently ubiquitous in innumerable applications and needs to reclaim its originality.
You are very welcome to contribute your specific expertise and curiosity to this event. The Symposium as well as the social event will offer you the unique opportunity to discuss solutions to both: classical issues and new directions. The following topics will be discussed:
Medical Computing (Session Chair: Karl Heinz Hoehne)
For quite some time applications of computer graphics technologies could be found mainly in engineering and artistic areas. Since the mid-90's the importance of CG in medical applications has increased dramatically. Starting from mere "medical imaging" applications for diagnostic support, we currently observe a clear shift towards therapy, surgery and invasive techniques support including navigation in the body, minimal invasive methods, image guided therapy etc. In Irradiation Cancer Treatment Systems computer graphics is the essential base of all innovations. Additionally, a new era of treatment, pre-planning and medical simulators for invasive methods grant benefits that jet pilots have enjoyed for 20 years now.
The contributions of the workshop aim at giving a brief overview over this innovative, exciting and extensively developing field.
Digital Storytelling (Session Chair: Henry Fuchs)
The broad breakthrough of digital information media can only be achieved when, as in well-established media, "stories" are conveyed that fascinate the audience. Digital applications can offer support and entertainment during leisure time, as well as intelligent assistance at the workplace.
Further developments call for new, interdisciplinary methods of graphic simulation, animation and forms of interaction.
Ubiquitous Computing (Session Chair: James J. Thomas)
Humans' activities - professional or private - are based on a broad range of interactions with numerous external objects: discussing project plans with colleagues, setting up a multimedia presentation in a conference room, editing documents, delegating travel planning to a secretary, driving a car, buying a ticket from a vending machine, visiting an exhibition, controlling the TV at home, etc.
Currently, computers are moving from the desktop to the infrastructure of everyday life. They begin to influence the way we interact with our environment - the (physical) entities that we operate upon in order to achieve our daily goals. Today, intelligent assistance and natural interaction employing portable devices and wireless connectivity are the foci of research and implementation.
X-Reality (Session Chair: Andries van Dam)
Mixed Reality signifies a new paradigm of man-machine interaction using the combination of virtual and real worlds. On the one hand an enormous amount of new application opportunities can be foreseen, characterized by the efficiency of Mixed Reality visualization and its intuitive integration of multi-modal interaction. On the other hand, questions about availability of technical solutions and user acceptance remain open.
In this session, international pioneers of mixed reality will present their current research in this area, discussing their experience from the past and highlighting important notes and trends for future development and applications.
