Professor Ulrich Panne, Head of BAM's Department I Analytical Chemistry; Reference Materials and university professor for instrumental analytical chemistry at the Humboldt University Berlin, has been honoured with the Fresenius prize by the Society of German Chemists (GDCh) for his achievements in analytical chemistry. The Fresenius prize is awarded to personalities who have rendered special services in the scientific development and promotion of analytical chemistry.
Professor Panne received the Fresenius prize together with Professor Dr. Uwe Karst on 1 September at the GDCh's Chemical Scientific Forum 2009 which this year took place at the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main. The prize is endowed with 15,000 euro.
Ulrich Panne, born in 1964, studied chemistry majoring in analytical chemistry at the University of Dortmund and UCL London. After receiving his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Munich, a postdoc followed in 1993/94 at the European Joint Research Center Ispra. He habilitated at the Technical University of Munich about the development of spectrochemical methods for environmental and process analysis in 2001. After a call to the University of Leipzig, which he did not accept, he was appointed to his current position in Berlin in 2004.
Professor Panne's personal research activity is focussed on instrumental analysis, and in particular, on the development of spectrochemical methods. His working group has gained new insights into the material and time-related dynamics of complex matrices in process and environmental analysis using in situ and on-line spectroscopic methods.
