Mit rund 7.000 Teilnehmern aus über 150 Nationen ist die Universiade die weltweit größte Spitzensportveranstaltung nach den Olympischen Spielen. Für diese "Olympiade der Studierenden" hat der Allgemeine Deutsche Hochschulsportverband (adh) in Absprache mit den jeweiligen Fachverbänden nun an die 100 Athleten nominiert. Darunter finden sich auch sieben Studierende von der Universität Würzburg: Es sind Marvin Willoughby (Basketball) sowie Jörg Fiedler, Fabian Schmidt, Lars Schache, Katrin Holz, Martin Kindt und Marcus Schulz (alle Fechten). Lars Schache hat bereits eine Goldmedaille gewonnen, und zwar bei der Europameisterschaft im Florett (Team) in Konstanz. Die Universiade findet vom 22. August bis 2. September 2001 in Peking statt.
