Im Alltag einer Intensivstation kommt es zu vielen Situationen, in denen Eile angesagt ist und bei denen die Mediziner schnell Erfolg versprechende Rezepte zur Hand haben müssen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entstand an der Intensivstation der Medizinischen Klinik der Universität Würzburg ein "Kochbuch Intensivmedizin", das die Frage "Was tun, wenn ..." für wichtige Bereiche der Intensivmedizin kurz und pragmatisch beantworten soll - ganz nach Art eines Kochbuchs: "Man nehme ...".
Die Autoren wollen auch Tipps und Tricks weitergeben, die sich im Laufe ihrer langjährigen Tätigkeit in der Intensivmedizin ergeben haben. Die Kapitel "Gastrointestinale Blutung" und "Ernährung des Intensivpatienten" hat Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Scheppach geschrieben. Dr. Wolfgang Müllges ist für die Bereiche Schlaganfall, Status epilepticus und Hirntod verantwortlich. Dr. Kai Lopau übernahm das Kapitel über die Organexplantation.
