Prof. Ewald Schnug first German President of the International Centre of Fertilizers (CIEC)

Julius Kühn-Institut

Prof. Dr. Cristian Hera handed over the presidency of CIEC during the closing ceremony of the 15th World Fertilizer Congress in Bucharest to Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Dr. h. c. Ewald Schnug, head of the Institute for Crop and Soil Science of the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) in Braunschweig (Germany).

The „Centre International des Engrais Chimiques“ (CIEC) was founded in 1933 by representatives of 29 nations as a non-governmental organization in Rome. The first president was the Swiss agricultural minister Dr. Feisst. Worldwide CIEC is the only organization specialized on fertilization and adjacent areas. In 1996 Prof. Dr. Cristian Hera (Rumanian) took over presidency after Prof. Montjardino (Italian) and Prof. Jelenic (Yugoslavia). At that time he was coordinator of the FAO/IAEAO Program for nuclear applications in nutritional and agricultural sciences in Wien. Later on he was president of the Rumanian Academy for Agricultural and Forestry Science. Up to now CIEC has organized and published the results of 34 world fertilizer congresses and 22 fertilizer symposia in 22 different countries all over the world.

The international meetings of CIEC are an excellent platform for scientist all over the world to discuss their actual scientific results with experts in the field of fertilization. Traditionally CIEC is an excellent forum for scientist from high-tech agriculture as well as from organic farming. Especially the discussions of these very different scientific fields of research, between scientists and representatives from industry as well as researchers from industrialized and developing countries produced new ideas. It has been the basement for innovative new projects and co-operations.

A special challenge for the new president of CIEC is to direct the organization to future questions and problems in the field of fertilization. A foretaste for this multilayer problem was the topic of the 15th World Fertilizer Congress in Bucharest: “Meeting the Fertilizer Demand on a changing Globe: Biofuels, Climate Change and Contaminants”.
