"Quality assurance: EQUIS in defence of European values in management education"
Why did WHU-Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management in Koblenz and University of St Gallen go for EQUIS?
The European Foundation for Management Development (efmd), announces a high level round table debate to take place at the Airport Club in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 16th 2001, from 11:00 to 13:00. The aim of this event is threefold:
- To listen to the testimony of accredited German-speaking schools on the added value of EQUIS.
- To listen to the testimony of companies on the added value of international quality assurance in management education.
- To explain the mission and procedures of EQUIS, and compare it with the American system of AACSB
efmd's German-speaking members in Austria, Germany and Switzerland have come together to promote its mission of federating the profession and promoting the quality of management education in schools, universities and companies.
EQUIS accreditation was launched 4 years ago as a special project within the network. It was created in order to provide a European system of quality assessment and accreditation. Although it has now become a major activity, it is nonetheless only one of a range of activities in an organisation whose mission is much broader. The fundamental objective, linked to the mission of the efmd, is to raise the standard of management education in Europe, both individually for schools and faculties and systemically for national management education structures.
EQUIS has been designed to complement national accreditation systems, and to give recognition to institutions that, in addition to high standing in their own national environments, have demonstrated that they emerge as players on a wider international market. An objective of EQUIS, particularly in the early stages, was to contribute to the constitution of a European market for management education, over and above the series of compartmentalised national markets. It was designed to help prospective students and recruiting companies from one country to identify those institutions in other countries that deliver high quality education for international management. Flexibility and respect for diversity are fundamental principles underlying the system, which is not constructed upon any particular model, Anglo-saxon or otherwise.
47 institutions, of which four are non-European, have now been accredited and these include most of Europe's leading business schools. The full list is available at www.efmd.be
