In the urban context of coastal Hadhramawt, there are three main
types of socio-political organisations : 1- The most global is the state,
being the one of the Qua‘iti sultanate until 1967, the socialist state
(1967-1990) or the government since the unification. 2- The second
one refers to the social stratification which implies a hierarchy between
the groups. 3- The last type of social organisation is the quarter
    organisation.
Overlapping in various dimensions, those different levels of socio-political
organisations all include a specific way of breeding tensions,
conflicts and violence’s but they also all include a specific way of dealing
    and regulating them.
Sylvaine Camelin will present the classical types of oppositions that
can be found in the hadrami society (between cities and countryside
// between Sultan and tribes // between two kind of religious lineages
// between quarters within the cities), showing that confrontation can
only occur between groups belonging to the same social strata.
By looking at precise examples, in a first part Camelin will show how
conflicts occur, how they are expressed and how they are dealt with
and in a second part, she will analyse under which conditions violence
can or can not be regulated, either on a small and local level or on a
    much larger area context.

Sylvaine Camelin is an anthropologist, lecturer in Paris-Ouest la
Défense University. Her Ph.D. dissertation analysed the articulation
between urban space and social organisation in the south Yemeni
town of Shihr. She is now working in the Gulf Emirate on the migration
of qualified Arab women. Last books : Ethnologie, Camelin S., Houdart
S., 2010, Paris, PUF collection Que sais-je ; Portraits. Esquisses anthropographiques,
    Ed. Camelin S., Jungen Ch., Massard-Vincent J.,
    2011, Paris, Petra.
