Prof. Dr. Bem lebte zwischen 1985 und 1999 in Neuenburg bei Freiburg, Mulhouse (wo sie Professorin an der dortigen Universität war) und Basel.
Sie entwickelte eine Leidenschaft für die Basler Fastnacht, war jedes Jahr dabei und fotografierte. Die Ausstellung - ein Geschenk von Prof. Bem an das Romanistische Institut aus Anlass ihres 60. Geburtstags im Februar 2002 - zeigt eine Auswahl ihrer Fotografien und gibt eine literarische wie auch ethnologische Interpretation.
