Dass ein FH-Absolvent promoviert, gehört in Deutschlands Hochschullandschaft (noch) nicht zum Alltag: Am 04. März 2002 hat Diplom-Ingenieur (FH) Dirk Blankenburg seine Dissertation "Untersuchungen zur Schwefelversorgung von Gemüsepflanzen" an der Landwirtschaftlich-Gärtnerischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin verteidigt. Das Ergebnis lautet "magna cum laude".
Dirk Blankenburg hatte seine Doktorarbeit neben seiner Tätigkeit als Leiter des Versuchsbetriebes am Fachbereich Gartenbau der FH Erfurt in einem Zeitraum von vier Jahren angefertigt. Der gebürtige Erfurter hatte von 1991 bis 1995 an der FH Erfurt Gartenbau studiert. Seine damalige Diplomarbeit hatte Untersuchungen zur Kultur und zu Sorten der Pfefferminze zum Thema. Er hatte ca. 45 Pfefferminzsorten untersucht.
