München, 15. Oktober 2002 - Professor Theodor W. Hänsch, Professor der Sektion Physik der LMU, und Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, wurde im August 2002 zum neuen auswärtigen Mitglied der Accademia Nazionale die Lincei gewählt. Diese italienische nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften wurde 1603 in Rom gegründet und zählte bereits den Naturforscher Galileo Galilei zu ihren Mitgliedern. Die Verleihung der Urkunde findet am 8. November 2002 im Corsini-Palast in Rom statt. Im Anschluss empfängt der Italienische Staatspräsident Carlo Azeglio Ciampi die neuen Mitglieder der Akademie im Quirinal-Palast. Auf dem Gebiet der Physik, Chemie und deren Anwendungen zählt die Akademie nun weltweit 19 auswärtige Mitglieder, darunter 9 Nobelpreisträger.
