Der Nobelpreisträger für Physik von 1998, Walter Kohn, erhält am 21. Oktober (14 Uhr) die Ehrendoktorwürde der Fakultät Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften der TU Dresden. Aus diesem Anlaß hält Professor Kohn einen Vortrag zum Thema "Science in the new Century: For better and-alas-for worse".
Walter Kohn wurde am 9.3.1923 in Wien geboren. Er musste aufgrund der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten emigrieren und studierte an der University of Toronto, Canada, und an der Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, wo ihm 1948 auch der Grad eines "Ph.D." verliehen wurde. Studienaufenthalte in Paris, Copenhagen, Jerusalem, London und Zürich folgten ebenso wie Konsulententätigkeit für die Firmen Westinghouse, Bell, General Atomic und IBM. Er lehrte und forschte als Chairman des Department of Physics an der University of San Diego, California und als Professor of Physics an der University of Santa Barbara, California, wo er 1991 auch emeritierte. Prof. Walter Kohn ist Autor von 175 wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten und wurde bisher mit fünf Ehrendoktoraten ausgezeichnet. Er legte unter anderem den theoretischen Grundstein für die Halbleiter-Technologie und entdeckte die nach ihm benannte "Kohn-Anomalie" bei Supraleitern. Kohns wichtigste Erkenntnisse betrafen aber die Erforschung von Festkörperstrukturen.
